Back to Newsletter index

All Nations is going Upscale!

Or at least uphill. After decades of serving Vancouver from the downtown core, All Nations Stamp and Coin will be moving in the New Year to the lovely Dunbar/Southlands neighbourhood. The new store will be located in what is now The Silver Shop at 5630 Dunbar St, just a few steps north of 41st Ave, home of the venerable Lawrence Used Books.

The final day in the Hudson's Bay Company store will be Saturday, January 26, 2008.

The first day in the new location will be Friday, February 1, 2008.

map The Silver Shop has been located here since 1989 and owner Murray James has been a silversmith for 35 years, specializing in antique silver. Murray is also renowned for his repair skills and will be keeping his repair shop at the rear of the store.

Murray will still be available at the shop for repairs and can be reached at 604-263-3133.

But whether you come to the shop to see Murray or Brian, you will have to plan to spend some time in our new neighbourhood.

Directly across the street is The Celtic Treasure Chest, purveyors of all things British. one of two stores, the other being in White Rock with a full bakery, both shops feature teas, candies and other grocery products from England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Isle of Man, including Marks & Spencer goodies and Coronation Street collectables.

They also have a large selection of sausages made locally to their own recipes, and a large selection of meat pies from their White Rock bakery. This author can attest to the quality of the best steak and kidney pie I have ever tasted.

Check out their web site for the full roster.

Fresh sausage rolls, meat pies of all description and pasties fill the case at the bottom. Yum.

Lawrence BooksAs mentioned, Lawrence Books occupies the corner of Dunbar and 41st Ave. Originally located across Dunbar where the Bank of Nova Scotia now stands, they moved several decades ago into this location, one of the original shops in the neighbourhood.

Just around the corner on 41st Ave, there are several retail and professional shops on the south side and a large IGA Market Place on the north side. Highlights include Spice Islands Indonesian Restaurant, a popular spot since 2004, several esthetic spas, a VQA wine shop, Dragon Phoenix Designer Consignment clothing, Bosley's pet food and an organic coffee shop.

The Saturday that I was exploring, a Fraser Valley Apiary had their truck on the corner, selling fresh honey.
