The Dust Settles at the New Dunbar Store |
After weeks of packing what must be millions of items into boxes, Sunday, January 27 was the day to move it all from the old shop in the Bay to the new store at Dunbar and 41st. A half dozen friends, clients and employees piled everything on a fleet of heavy-duty push carts and turning it all into a Zen exercise, managed the move without a hitch. After five days of organizing everything onto the shelves, the store was opened to the public and christened with Auction #650 attended by a good crowd. |

| The sign is temporary as the landlord will be installing new awnings when the snow stops blowing. One of the great things about the new location is how nice the new neighbours are. So be sure when you come to shop or attend the auction, grab a coffee at the Celtic Shop across the street and pack a lunch if you plan on browsing at Lawrence Books. | ||

| This author had a chance to meet Ann Lawrence in her book shop at 3591 W 41st Ave on the corner of Dunbar. A fun and very pleasant woman who is running the shop started as a retirement project by her parents 25 years ago. After starting out in a small storefront on Dunbar, it soon moved into what used to be Nightingale Drugs on the corner of 41st and has now expanded into every possible nook and cranny and is home to over 100,000 books on every topic imaginable. | ||

| There is a grotto of children's books decorated with murals of Dr. Seuss characters painted by a former employee. Another main department is militaria with books and collectables. The store has been used as a movie location for several films, including the thriller "Sole Survivor" based on Dean Koontz's best-selling novel. In fact, someone who saw the movie turned up at the shop one day and announced "This is it!"
Lawrence Books is open seven days a week from 1:30 to 5:30, 12:30 on Saturdays, just after the All Nations Auction. They do not have a web site. |
