Pierre Elliott Trudeau |
Canada's 134th birthday was the perfect occasion for our nation to honour the Kennedy of Canada, Canada's 15th Prime Minister, Pierre Elloitt Trudeau, with a stamp commemorating his life. The 47c commemorative reproduces British Columbia artist Myfanwy Pavelic's portrait of Trudeau, which hangs in the House of Commons. | |
Unfortunately, July 1st was a Sunday, so stamp distribution has been somewhat interrupted. The 16 stamp mini sheets, printed in a quantity of six million, were available well before the Tuesday July 3 launch date, but the four stamp souvenir sheets, of which only two million were produced, were unavailable for distribution, except as part of the memorial presentation folder. Only 20,000 folders containing the souvenir sheet, a collectible portrait, and a souvenir card, were issued at $34.95 each.
Canada Post also missed an opportunity to collect money for the Trudeau family charities by issuing the stamp as a semi-postal. Since the Trudeau commemorative will undoubtedly sell out quickly, and many persons who do not normally save stamps will also want to have this issue, considerable extra funds could have been raised for charity. Canada Post did take advantage of the opportunity to raise their First Day Cover premium from 30c to $1.00 per piece. The Trudeau First Day Cover |

The commemorative cancel utilizes Tudeau's Coat of Arms and is dated 2001.07.01 Montreal, QC, where Trudeau was born on October 18, 1919. He died there on September 28, 2000.
A number of other nations are honouring Trudeau with commemorative stamps, Liberia among them, proving that Trudeau and true dough are still well thought of the world over. |
