Darnell First New Canadian Stamp Catalogue out for the Holiday Market. |
After several years' absence, The Darnell Stamps of Canada Catalogue is back, in a 10th edition for 2003, just in time for the holiday season gift market. Publisher Lyse Rousseau has added the stamps of British Columbia, Vancouver Island, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island to the new 414 page, colour, ringbound price guide. The Darnell's invented an alternative numbering system, more like Stanley Gibbons' than Scott's, which they use in this catalogue, and in their Canadian Stamp News price listings. As in previous editions, the catalogue is well laid out, with reasonably true colour illustrations adjacent to the stamp listings. One of the strengths of the Darnell Catalogue has always been the error listings, commonly referred to as E.F.O.s, or errors, freaks, and oddities, for stamp varieties that are not recorded and priced in other catalogues. Unfortunately, the variety illustrations that are not incorporated into the listings, have been dropped from this catalogue, but will appear in a separate, hundred page volume to be released in 2003. |

Collectors and dealers will appreciate the consistent product here. The size and format are the same as prior editions, so that carrying this catalogue to shows, shops, and club meetings is convenient still. The Darnell catalogue is a great alternative to the established Unitrade, Scott numbered, catalogue. Students of history will appreciate the Darnell catalogue write ups and background information. Topical collectors can make use of the thematic issues index. Current issues through 2002 are illustrated and priced. Even the 2003 Canada Post stamp program is included. The suggested retail for the new catalogue is $39.95 Cdn, and it is widely available from stamp dealers, Canada Post outlets, and booksellers. It is great to have two competitive catalogues in the marketplace. We get a better product as a result. The new Darnell catalogue has arrived, at least in Vancouver, first, and will no doubt be quickly acquired, by eager collectors and gift seeking family members. |
