Great Western Auctions Lives up to name

Back to Newsletter index

The inaugural Great Western Auction of the Jim Longbourne lifetime stamp collection, conducted by Andrew Blanchard, Beverly Fox and Brian Grant Duff on February 28 at the Renaissance Harbourside Vancouver Hotel, lived up to its name.

There were 140 different buyers in the 887 lot public and mail-bid sale, and the single vendor, multi generational property brought 20% more than the presale estimate of $150,000.00, proving that the Vancouver market can still support auctions of this calibre.

Internet viewing and bidding on the greatwesternauction.com website was very popular but most of the action occurred on the sales floor, with bidders packing three salesrooms and competing avidly throughout the seven hour event.  Dealer bidders particularly enjoyed the unpicked nature of the oldtime collection lots, and came from coast to coast, and throughout North America, to participate.

Presale viewing was exceedingly busy during the Great Western Stamp Show on the weekend prior to the Jim Longbourne collection auction.  Attendees of the sale described the auction as well organized and even applauded at the conclusion of the event of the young year in Vancouver. Realizations can be seen online here.
