Vancouver Canucks Coin Set |
The Royal Canadian Mint has issued a 2006/2007 Hockey Season Vancouver Canucks Coin Set, featuring the team’s original hockey stick logo, now used for their third jerseys, on a colourized twenty five cents coin, only available in the 2007 dated collector coin set. Last hockey season, the Mint produced team coin sets for Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa, as well as Hockey Legends Silver 50c coin sets for Montreal and Toronto. This year, the Mint produced team logo coin sets for the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, and the Vancouver Canucks. Will legends sets follow? |

Oddly, the Mint also issued a 2006 $20 Silver Coin of the Calgary Flames hockey rink. The first Canadian Hockey Coin was a $20 goaltender design issued for the Calgary Olympics in 1988. The Saddledome, the Calgary Flames play in, was built for those Olympics. Since the 1988 Hockey themed Olympic coin, the Mint made silver dollars showing the Stanley Cup in 1993, and the winning goal against the Russians in 1997. The $100 Gold Coin this year is a hockey theme, as was the 1991 $200 Gold coin. Olympic Ice hockey wins by Canada’s teams inspired lucky loon dollars over the past few years. |

Hockey players have appeared on non coin issues by the Royal Canadian Mint for Hockey Hall of fame inductees. Non Royal Canadian Mint hockey player coins exist for the Calgary Flames, and the Vancouver Canucks, and coin like medallions showing coloured player likenesses have been privately produced in recent years. The 2007 Vancouver Canucks coin set also includes collector quality examples of Canada’s 1¢-$2 coins, which feature the Mint’s new logo mintmark. The queen’s portrait on the coins is by Vancouver artist Susanna Blunt. The 2007 Vancouver Canucks coin set is ideal for team fans and autograph hounds. Imagine a set signed by new goaltender Roberto Luongo, and artist Susanna Blunt. |
